No single line could capture who they were. Behind their smile lay weariness; in their silence, courage; in their eyes, dreams they had not yet given up. The artist gave each of these its own color, and the face slowly changed upon the canvas. At first, those who saw the portrait tried to piece it together. Then they remembered how many different feelings they carried within themselves. That was when the painting became complete: a person’s wholeness came into view when none of what they had lived through needed to be erased.
