On the morning she was to move away, the woman cut the roses from the garden. Some had been planted by her mother; others she had planted herself, years ago, as small saplings. As she placed the flowers in her basket, she paid no mind to the thorns scratching her hands. Before leaving, she looked back at the house one last time. She had thought there was no way to take the years she had spent there with her. Then she lifted the basket. Among the roses were her mother’s voice, summer evenings spent watering the garden, and the work of her own hands. We cannot see her face. We do not know where she is going. We see only that she has set out carrying a piece of her past in her hands.
