As she dressed for a special occasion, the woman tucked a small flower into her hair. Looking in the mirror, she recognized the person others had seen in her for years: graceful, composed, always strong. Then she looked at the hand adjusting the flower. She thought of the people that hand had held, the things it had made, and all the times it had trembled yet carried on. For the first time, she let her expression remain as it was and looked at herself for a long while. Perhaps the gaze in the portrait belongs to that moment: the moment she understood she had nothing to prove.
